Winter Safety Tips!

With winter right around the corner, there are some safety tips you should follow for the cold months ahead.

Children should wear:
*thermal long johns
*One or two shirts
*pants
*coat
*snow suits when playing in the snow
*warm socks
*boots
*gloves or mittens
*hat

Parents should also know the signs of hypothermia. Hypothermia occurs when a child's temperature falls below normal due to exposure to cold. It often happens when a child is playing outdoors in extremely cold weather without wearing proper clothing. As hypothermia sets in, the child may shiver and become clumsy. Their speech may also become slurred. If you think you child may have hypothermia call 911 immediately.

When taking your children out sled riding be sure to supervise them and keep them away from motor vehicles, trees and fences. Also make sure they sit in their sleds feet first or sitting up.

Even though it’s not summer, still make sure you apply sunscreen when it’s really sunny out because the sun rays will still cause sunburn. Also make sure you stay hydrated after being out in the cold weather.

Teenagers and adults make sure you pay extra attention driving in the winter time. At this time deer are out running around everywhere and always be alert for them. Also when it starts to snow and sleet the roads will become very slippy. So drive slower then normal and leave for your destination a little bit early so you are not in a rush and you won’t have to drive fast.

These are just a few safety tips for the winter months ahead. Hope you enjoy!

Happy Halloween!

I would like too wish everyone a safe and Happy Halloween!! Recently I’ve attended the Huntingdon and Mount Union Halloween Parades which were both a lot of fun. I also attended the Captain Jack FFA Open House this past month where Mrs. Mowrer and Mrs. Forgy opened up the new and renovated Ag facilities to the public. They put on a nice little ceremony and sold mums and pumpkins in the new greenhouse, and of course Dairy Princess Krista Hawn and I’s favorite part, they had a ton of refreshments for afterwards. Krista and I also got the privilege of drawing the winning beef tickets that were sold for the Captain Jack members to go to National Convention in Indianapolis. It was a very fun night for public to come in and see the new facilities. I have also been busy scrap booking and working on everything for state pageant with my coordinators. The next stop on my “queen” adventure is Banquet Time! November 4th is the Fair Board Banquet and November 6th is the 4-H Banquet. So if you’re planning on coming to either of those banquets I can’t wait and I’ll see you there!

Events!

Wow have I been busy lately! From meetings to banquets to farm city days to 4-H clubs and to elementary school programs. Recently I attended the Raystown Rabbit Ranchers 4-H club, where I did a presentation on Farm Safety 4 Just Kids and asked about each of the members experience at the fair. Then it was off to Alexandria for a meeting with the Grange where I got to give a presentation and read my speech, as well as answer any questions that they had. After my presentation they presented me with a Pennsylvania Grange cookbook. Next stop was the Farm Bureau Banquet, where the Marklesburg Fire Company prepared a wonderful meal for us. Then 2 days later I was off too Harrisburg for Farm City Days. At Farm City Days, buses and buses of inner-city kids and home-schooled children come to the Farm Show Complex and experience "life on the farm for a day." There were 19 other fair queens there as long as many dairy princess'. Then this past Saturday I attended Brady-Henderson Elementary in Mill Creek for their Fall Bash. I had a display set up on Farm Safety 4 Just Kids there and got to play some games and activities with the children. It was a very fun day and it was a great fundraiser for the school.

So as you can see I've been keeping very busy lately with my queen duties, but I am enjoying every single second of it. I have got to make so many memories and meet so many awesome people already and I am only 2 months into my reign!

Also just another reminder that my coordinators and I are still looking for old past time pictures from the fair for my scrapbook for state pageant. Thank you to everyone that has already given me your pictures. I appreciate all your help.

Until next time.

Fairs!!

Hello everyone,
Recently I was able to attend the Centre County Grange Fair as well as the Cambria County Fair. It is amazing to see how all the fairs run every thing so differently. I was fortunate enough to attend the fair queen coronation at both fairs. The Grange Fair and the Cambria County Fair both had nine girls competing for the crown at their pageant. I thought that was alot of girls seeing how we usually have 4-5 girls run at Huntingdon County, but then I met the Westmoreland Fair Queen and she said they usually have around 20-25 girls run for fair queen!! That just amazed me! I also got the privilege to meet the Clearfield County Fair Queen and the Somerset County Fair Queen. I really enjoyed going to the coronations and getting to meet and spend some time with all the contestants as well as all the other Queens.

Also, just a reminder that I am still looking for pictures from the fair from the past for my scrapbook for state pageant. If you could give me a copy of them that would be great! Thank you to everyone that has already given me pictures I really do appreciate all your help.

Pictures, Pictures, Pictures!!!!

Hello Everyone,
My fair queen coordinators and I are starting to work on my scrapbook for state pageant in Hershey in January. The fair motto this year is "Proud of our Heritage, Envisioning the Future." If you have or know of anyone who has pictures from the past at the Huntingdon County Fair I would really love to have a copy of them. We need as many pictures as we can get and I appreciate all the help from the public that I receive. So if you own or know anyone else that owns pictures from the past at the Huntingdon County Fair, if you could please email them to me or mail them to me that would be great! If you would like to mail them to me I would scan them on my computer and return the original a soon as possible. Thank you for all of your support and I am looking forward to a great year at promoting the one and only Huntingdon County Fair.
